This study investigated the relationship between short-term memory and listening comprehension in IELTS test takers at different proficiency levels. Here are the key findings:
For advanced proficiency test takers, there's a significant correlation between short-term memory and listening comprehension. This means better short-term memory predicts better performance in the listening part of the IELTS test.
Weaker correlations were found between short-term memory and listening comprehension for lower proficiency levels.
The findings suggest that short-term memory plays a more significant role in listening comprehension for advanced learners compared to lower proficiency learners.
These results raise a question about the validity of the IELTS listening test, particularly for advanced learners. The authors argue that short-term memory, a factor not directly related to language proficiency, shouldn't significantly influence test scores. They recommend that language teachers consider incorporating memory exercises to help students improve their short-term memory before taking the IELTS exam.
It's important to note that the study only shows a correlation, not a cause-and-effect relationship. The findings may not be generalizable due to the low correlation between the variables at lower proficiency levels.
